Abstract


AN INVESTIGATION OF METAPHORS ON THE CONCEPT OF LITERATURETEACHER AMONG PRESERVICE TURKISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE TEACHERS IN TURKEY

Metaphor can be described as one’s expressing perceptions about a fact or a notion thorough similes. Humankind expresses nonfigurative notions with the help of metaphors to understand/narrate them better since the ancient times. Metaphors have a very important place in one’s life with this function. In this study, trainee Turkish Language and Literature teachers’ perception about “literature teacher” notion is analyzed through metaphors. Phenomenology design of qualitative research is used in this study. The paradigm of the study is formed by trainee Turkish language and literature teachers. The data of this research is collected with semiconstructed open-ended question form. Participants that attended the research by voluntarily is requested to complete open-ended sentences similar to “Literature teacher is similar to/is like/reminds ............. because ............” The acquired data is divided into 11 categories by doing content analysis: knowledge source and/or provider (n= 30; %30), leader and director (n= 24; %24), role-model (n=12; %12), supporter of personal and emotional development (n= 8; %8), productive (n= 8; %8), a precious being (n=6; %6), former/moulder (n= 6; %6), super authority (n=3; %3), communication tool (n=1; %1), entertainer/relaxing (n=1; %1), example of love and sacrifice (n=1; %1). According to results, %58 of the participants (n=58) described the teacher as traditional (knowledge source and/or provider, leader and director, role-model, a precious being, former/moulder, super authority, example of love and sacrifice); %43 of them perceive the teacher as roles that fits better the qualities of modern education approaches (leader and director, supporter of personal and emotional development, productive, communication tool, entertainer/relaxing).
